I am empty with beginner's mind.
Making this a good time to reprint the lyrics to my debut 45, omitting for now the up tempo flip, "My World (and Welcome to It)". The songs took on lives of their own when Sara and Hester found them at the Salvation Army, dubbed themselves The Saved, and brought the old single to my Bennington College band. Their singing, dancing, and costuming made the SaveLoves complete.
The anthemic quality is lost here but the words - decades later, in an admittedly way grayer, more paved world, including my village - do speak their gravity without the music.
People asking questions about how we came to be
People are all wondering about what to do with what they see
People want to know what it means to be alive
People trying to remember for exactly what it is they strive
On the paved part of the planet
We’re still trying to decide
On the paved part of the planet
We all want that free ride
On the paved part of the planet
We’re still trying to decide
On the paved part of the planet
If god is really on our side
And with God on our side, there can be no problem
And with love on our side, these problems must be meant to help us
And where one finds no love, you just need to reach that much farther
Inside
On the paved part of the planet
We’re still trying to decide
On the paved part of the planet
If we have enough inside
If you have four wheels and drive by daylight
And a stable family
What more could you ask for
Than just to save the life of the trees
By the paved part of the planet
